Personal branding and website launch – Monty Halls

Drive Creative Studio have been working with television broadcaster, travel writer, expedition leader, marine biologist and overall cracking chap Monty Halls, to develop his personal branding strategy and produce a new brand website.

Most well known for his blue-chip BBC TV Series The Great Barrier Reef, Monty is also a seasoned inspirational speaker and corporate leadership trainer – two key areas of focus within our brief. We worked closely with Monty to develop his brand positioning, strategy and identity, culminating in a new website aimed specifically at three distinct markets.



The existing brand identity and architecture focussed on rugged adventure, and while exploration is still a passion for Monty (his new TV series Lost Worlds airs on the Discovery Channel this February), the new identity scheme needed to reposition his personal brand to attract a more corporate audience without losing personality. Subtle refinements, sub-branding and naming conventions were established to distinguish these new offerings which would be most visible through the new Monty Halls website.


Using the primary menu to segregate the three distinct offerings (representing both Monty’s personal skill-set and his services), and scrolling sub navigations within each area, the website experience is streamlined for each target market with minimal crossover of information. It is also fully responsive with a heavily customised WordPress CMS, so all content is easily updateable – even for Monty’s globe-trotting lifestyle. Despite the use of large brand imagery and long segmented pages, the use of CSS3 transitions add interactivity without adding weight and ensure fast page load times.

We also identified the need for video content to capture the spirit and ethos of Monty’s talks in the best way possible – through an emotive and personal one-to-one video. This collaborative film was shot on location at our Exeter based Studio.
